Tara Inn- Port Jefferson, NY A.K.A. My Happy Place.

On Main Street in Port Jefferson NY, you will find the closest thing to ‘Cheers’ in a 250 mile radius . The place is the Tara Inn, affectionately known as Tara’s.

Since 1977, the Higgin’s family has brought happiness, relaxation, fun, great drinks and awesome food to the village.

From the moment you step on the ancient floor boards to the time you reluctantly leave with a full belly and wallet, you have no choice but to enjoy.

Everyone working here is genuine, unique and will make you happy. Correction, the floors have recently been remodeled so that you can walk without your flip flops getting stuck to the decades of spilled beer.

$1.00 burgers with chips! $1.00 Huge homemade roast beef sangies…. 99 cent glasses of beer!!! How can you go wrong?

Tara’s offers a special menu from over 30 years ago that has the above mentioned items as well as a liverwurst sandwich, bologna sandwich, order of fries, garden salad and much more for just about a buck. That’s crazy talk!!

The most expensive item on the menu is a porterhouse steak that is under $15, served to your specifications and about the size of my laptop.

The classic menu is written on chalkboards and the specials are on paper plates hanging on the walls, but make no mistake….some of the food is worthy of being placed on your finest china.

Behold the Delicious Bacon Cheeseburger Special

$9.99 Lobster Dinner Special

Complete with salad and fries. Are you kidding me? No, I’m not. It’s a 1 1/4 lb lobster, steamed to perfection with drawn butter.

If you have a problem eating lobster in a bar you can go next door to the PJ Lobster house and get the same thing for 3 times the amount or even go down town to the tourist trap known as The Steam Room and get the lobster special for almost double the price.

Granted there are many fried foods on the menu, but just because it’s fried doesn’t mean that it has been cryogenically frozen since Ted Williams head was.

Fried shrimp, calamari, jalapeno poppers, pierogies, crab cakes, mini tacos and the delicious list goes on and on and on and on…..

You Want a Cold Beer or a Martini or Even a Slow Comfortable Screw…I’m Talking About the Drink….

Well, you’ve come to the right place.

Always a great selection of taps, with the old standbys..Bud, Miller Light, Sam Adams and of course, the Irish milkshake, Guinness.

So, if you are looking to have a great meal, relax, watch a game, play some pool or just pound a few beers and forget the crap that’s going on outside…come to Tara’s..and of course, drink responsively.
