86th Annual San Gennaro Festival N.Y.C. Sept 11th thru the 21st.

No festival, party or event can epitomize the end of Summer like San Gennaro can.

In my non-humble opinion, it is the best festival all year, every year and MUST be experienced in New York City, to know why.

The San Gennaro festival, is N.Y.C.’s largest and oldest street festival, and might I add….the coolest.

This is the 86th annual celebration of San Gennaro,(Saint Gennaro) the Patron Saint of Naples. The first feast in New York City occured on September 19, 1926.

OMG..86 years of tradition, the celebration of faith and getting shit faced in the streets with sauce all over your t-shirt.

How did it all begin?

It all started when new immigrants arrived at Ellis Island from Naples Italy settled around Mulberry St. in the Little Italy section of New York City and continued the rich tradition they had followed in Italy to celebrate the day in,back in 305 A.D., when Saint Gennaro was martyred for his strong faith.

What it Means to Many:

Sausage & peppers, pasta, cannoli, carnival type games, cheap and cheesy t-shirts for the mafia wanna be inĀ us all, annoying toothless hillbilly carnival barkers yelling at the crowd “common…win yer wife a gigantic stuffed chicken doll”..,rosary beads, community coming together and enjoying life…and of course….pleanty of wine and beer….and beer….and more beer. Mangia.

Again, if you are from NY or the tri-state area, this festival means more than this.

With it’s proximity so close to ground zero, you cannot feel different when coming here than when you did years ago.

There is that wonderful chill in the air, the calm energy of fun, but no site of the Twin Towers. This is still the hardest part for me attending this feast in a post 9/11 era, so I say a silent prayer each time I enter Little Italy.

Hopefully you are able to make it, but if you don’t..you might as well..

fuggettaboutit, until next year.
